A delightful shot of a D31 at an unknown location sometime between 1913 and 1923 (the large-format reporting numbers were introduced in the second half of 1913 for goods engines). It is worth noting that at least the first two wagons in the train belong to the rival Great North of Scotland Railway, but given that the north east of Scotland had very little in the way of natural coal reserves, they would be heavily dependent on the Fife coalfields in particular for the supply of good quality locomotive coal. Given the fact that the second vehicle is indeed a fully-laden Great North of Scotland 'LOCO COAL' wagon, it is likely that the train is heading north.
